Steel Winds sits on the shores of Lake Erie, on top of a brownfield left behind by an abandoned steel mill.  The Project was developed in two phases, and now consists of fourteen 2.5 MW wind turbines. The combined Project generates up to 50 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year – enough to power approximately 9,000 New York homes - and helps bring the State closer to its goal of 30% renewable energy sources by 2015 (30 x 15).  At Steel Winds, First Wind is harvesting the famous winds of the Great Lakes, and making productive use of brownfield land unsuitable for most other purposes.
