| Portland, ME—September 30, 2008—First Wind, an independent wind power company, today announced it has donated a total of $30,000 to four Maine county-based community programs. This donation is part of a statewide effort by First Wind, which includes individual contributions of $7,500 that are directed to heating assistance funds to help Maine residents with the escalating costs of heating their homes this winter. The four programs receiving donations are: Aroostook County Action Program, Inc.; Community Concepts; Penquis Keep ME Warm Fund; and Washington Hancock Community Agency THAW Fund. All of the programs are members of the Maine Community Action Association, Inc. (MCAA). “First Wind is committed to the development of new sources of clean, wind energy for the people of Maine, but we also recognize the challenges many families will face this winter as they cope with the rising home heating costs associated with traditional fuel sources,” said Matt Kearns, Vice President of Development for First Wind. “We are pleased to make these donations, which is part of our larger effort to support existing programs across Maine that provides financial assistance to residents in need.” The MCAA helps residents deal with issues related to energy conservation, utility cost, housing rehabilitation, child care, health care, nutrition, homelessness and transportation. First Wind donated $7,500 each to the following heating assistance programs administered through MCAA affiliates this winter:
The programs are affiliated with the State of Maine’s Keep ME Warm Fund, a statewide partnership with the goal of helping Maine people stay safe, warm and secure this winter through public and private contributions, volunteerism and advocacy. A list of resources for those who wish to make a contribution to a heating assistance donation program is available through the 2-1-1 Maine website at www.211maine.org. First Wind owns and operates the largest utility-scale operating wind energy project in New England, the 42 MW Mars Hill Wind project in Mars Hill, ME. First Wind is also constructing the 57 MW Stetson Wind project near Danforth, ME, which is expected to begin commercial operations at the end of 2008. |
